Sanji's mother died, so even he has a dead loved one in his past.

Though I gotta say, I don't think I'd call Nami's backstory worse than Kuma's. Nami's backstory is essentially the lite version of what slaves of the world nobles experience. At least Nami was never hunted and killed for sports and entertainment. Dito Rebecca's backstory.

ayrt omg how did I forget about Sora? it's been a long day.

either way, I struggle to find anyone of importance to the story who doesn't have at least one dead family member/loved one in their backstory so it still just doesn't resonate with me as anything atypical or specifically gendered to mothers vs fathers or whatever.
