For me it's more about the killing off of specifically female and mother characters in relationship to a male character's motivation. That just annoys me

I'd say it's pretty clear that Bonney is Kuma's motivation, actually. Sure, Kuma was a bit more violent when fighting with the RA for a bit but the moment Bonney became sick Kuma immediately left the RA to take care of his daughter. Everything he's doing he's done for Bonney.
