(Anonymous) 2023-12-02 02:37 am (UTC)(link)So... we should go ahead and let babies be abused and murdered because they might be dickheads in the future??

(Anonymous) 2023-12-02 03:45 am (UTC)(link)But no. No, it's not okay to murder children. It's not okay to purposely kill civilians, no matter which side they're on. But this isn't about them. This is about the government of Palestine right now, which is a theocratic dictatorship, and which not only intends to continue being so, but would very much like to extend that dictatorship beyond the borders of their land. They want a global caliphate.
The point is not that the average Palestinian doesn't deserve to be free; they do. The point is that one must be careful about one's bedfellows, and about how that freedom is achieved. Wiping Israel off the map will not free those people if Hamas remains in power. They will continue to be subjugated. But should that come to pass, I can almost guarantee that people will suddenly care less about it, because it will then be "their own" who are harming them.
I don't think most people are really against oppression as a matter of principle. I think they're against it theoretically and contextually, but are fine with it when either it doesn't affect them or it aligns with their sense of identity. When many (not all) people say "free Palestine," they mean it as an indictment of the West, at whom they're angry. They do not care what happens to Palestinians after Israel is gone. They will not continue to say "free Palestine" if it turns out that Palestine is not really free.
