I also felt very bored by AWoE, but I loved Tombs of Atuan. For me the novelty of Atuan's setting and Tenar as a character and the sheer atmosphere of the tombs carried me along through Le Guin's slower writing style, in a way that the fairly boilerplate thin plot of AWoE did not.

AYRT - no insult meant for Tombs! I just would have an easier time accepting the OP’s premise with it. It’s slow and methodical even compared to Wizard. Though I really ought to give tombs a re-read, I did Wizard recently so it’s fresh in my mind.

I liked A Wizard of Earthsea okay, but I loved The Tombs of Atuan. One of her best books imo. The psychological complexity of Tenar's situation and how that affects the choices she makes (and hence how the plot develops) is just wonderfully depicted.
