Oof that sucks. Ive never lived anywhere that reminded you. That would be very handy! And honestly, 5 months late and only a $90 fee? Not bad. I got pulled over for being one month late and had a month to get the tags and then I had to go to court to prove I had them and pay a $250 fee on top of all that. Such bullshit.

Maybe add a reminder in your phone for next time. Also, cool that you can do it for 2 years!

Huh, really? My state mails out a thing to you about a month ahead.

That is so nice! I think my state likes to collect the fines from all us forgetful folks :(

I had no idea other states didn't send notices to car owners. My experience has always been, at the start of the month of your plate's expiration you are sent a notice letter in your mail.

You can renew online or go in person (usually if you have to show proof of insurance or you're way overdue). You are also given notice if you have to get an emissions test done in the notice. I don't know if all states have the same laws when it comes to emissions tests.

Also, I don't know if this is different in other states too, we have a month's grace period. So, even if, for example, your plates are expired in February, so long as you pay for your plates by the last day of March, you will not be charged an overdue fee.
