Anyone want to explain what a landcomm is?

Fandom lore says it's communities where people are split into teams and participate in challenges. The team with the most points wins.

I've participated in a few and it is exactly what the other commenter said. You sign up for a round, choose a team (or are assigned), and then over the course of a couple of months you do challenges for points and at the end one team is the winner. The winner just gets bragging rights and a banner to add to their journal profile usually. The challenges are things like, writing a fic or making fanart, making a mix tape and cover art, doing puzzles like word search or online jigsaws, making icons, playing browser games etc. There's something for everyone to do no matter their level of creativity.

[community profile] lands_of_magic I think is still active if anyone is interested. I'm not a member at the moment so I am not sure, but I think they will probably start a new round soon since the last one started in September. But you can join at any time.

lands of magic is the only one I'm currently in and yes, you can still join any time. February it will be on hiatus so I guess this round will finish January 2024.

I would probably weight down my own team, but it looks like a fun way to get yourself going!

I was around back in the day, but never even heard of this and now I'm bummed. It sounds like fun, with the right group of people.

Oof, same. I could have written this. Landcomms were so great for my creativity. After I graduated from college, though, whatever it was that allowed me to take part in them disappeared and I just don't have the time / the deadlines aren't motivating / I'm not keen on the social aspect anymore. I've switched to doing multifandom exchanges instead, and that's working for me in terms of fanwork/creativity, but it's not as good at helping me make long-lasting fandom friends as landcomms were.
