It's a whole different genre which I enjoy very much! Are there high fantasy novels being adapted as urban fantasy to be cheaper? I would be very surprised. And it's not like urban fantasy would be cheap to make either...

The only fantasy I like is urban fantasy. Can't stand high fantasy.

Yeah, and I'm really surprised the secret posters sees it as a way to "dodge worldbuilding"! Urban fantasy has terrific and complex worldbuilding!

Recs?

Maybe I'm weird or wrong (???) but I consider a lot of monster fiction to be urban fantasy, and I love vampires and werewolves and things in these settings.

So yes, if those are urban fantasy, they are my favorite.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-07 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I rarely can get through High fantasy. Urban is much more fun

(Anonymous) 2023-12-07 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't HATE high fantasy, especially if you give me non-European based fantasy in general because so much of that has a very samey feel, but I definitely prefer urban.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-06 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I dislike the genre too, but not for thise reasons. I just uave never read a well written urban fantasy. They are all lazy poorly written blah fests.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-06 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the idea of urban fantasy, but rarely enjoy the execution. I think I'm still too scarred from the whole 90s "leather-clad chick with a tramp stamp and knives" on book covers novels and Laurell K. Hamilton.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-07 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, the high fantasy book covers of those eras mostly had busty princess elves and/or shirtless knights with knives.

Paperback fantasy covers were just kind of like that for a while.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-07 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
That's an over-generalization. Some of the busty princesses and shirtless knights were kniveless and posing semi-erotically with horses or dragons.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-07 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, there's plenty of high fantasy out there with absolutely anemic worldbuilding. Elves and dwarves, swords and sorcery - boom, done!

It honestly depends on the author, for both genres.

“I don’t like this, so it shouldn’t exist!” GTFO with that whiny entitlement. Just don’t read or watch what you don’t like. Fuck’s sake *smh*

(Anonymous) 2023-12-07 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oof struck a nerve?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-07 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
They have a point. It is pretty entitled to say something just shouldn't exist because you don't like it.
Just because someone may be personally bothered when rebutting doesn't mean that they're not making valid points .
Fuck off back to 4chan with that "u mad" bull

I feel like it would take just as much world building work to really make fantasy elements fit with modern urban settings believably. I tend to like high fantasy more, but that's a personal preference. I think urban fantasy can have really great world building.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-07 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I can't stand high fantasy. It's all very samey. Gimme all the urban fantasy!

(Anonymous) 2023-12-07 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Well I guess I gotta go write more urban fantasy for those of us who enjoy it <3

I hate fantasy stasis where nothing changes over thousands of years. I feel like more “techy” fantasy is a decent way to progress a setting.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-07 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I like the idea, rarely the execution. I'm bored of Hidden Magical Worlds. I'm annoyed by the thought that there's always been magic but somehow the world ended up just like ours.

That's right! My ideal urban fantasy is Shadow Run!

(Anonymous) 2023-12-07 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Shadow Run was a fantastic setting!

(Anonymous) 2023-12-07 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the idea wasn't that the world ended up just like ours despite having hidden magic that ours doesn't; it was that we're supposed to imagine it is our world and we just don't know about the hidden magic "in real life" (ie outside of the story) because, well, it's hidden from us.

I don't mean we're supposed to believe that for real of course, but part of the fantasy is giving us a world we could pretend is really hiding in the midst of ours.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-07 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
No. Urban fantasy is awesome. Go read your tired cliché Elves vs Orcs and kindly fuck off.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-07 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
High fantasy always has this idealized medieval setting, wizards with beards, shiny elves, unwashed dwarves... Just no. Enough. Give me an average person with some fashion sense, thanks.
