(Anonymous) 2023-12-10 05:06 am (UTC)(link)90s Internet was akin to the commons of old, where there wasn’t really anyone in charge, and everyone could set up a little space for themselves and run it however they wanted, so long as it didn’t interfere with someone else’s space or outright break the law. Now, the Internet has been effectively bought up and is the property of various corporations who can control it however they like with little recourse for ordinary people.
Remember Net Neutrality? There’s a reason the Internet became almost unusable as a research tool, once it was stripped away. The vast majority of Americans polled were overwhelmingly in favor of Net Neutrality, but luckily, the government didn’t let that stop them from stripping it away.
And there’s a certain charm to be found in the amateurish formatting and graphics of personal fan sites.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-10 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)It was also a lot easier to navigate in a "wow this is interesting information, but it's from a rando's website on geocities.com and not a .edu or .org or .gov, so...kinda sus." Misinformation still got around but it felt like it was easier to find real sources for things, or at least easier to find reliable websites.
