Oh how shocking that the guy who wrote Downton Abbey and Gosford Park is a tory.

If it bugs you, buy books secondhand so you're not paying him.

It's interesting, because Gosford Park comes across as so contemptuous of the wealthy, and as being very much in the servants' corner.

nayrt - Agreed. I enjoyed the film because of the contrast between the upstairs vs. downstairs, plus murder mystery, plus Helen Mirren. A+ cast overall, really.

da
There literally were two shows called Upstairs, Downstairs about this sort of thing (the 1970s British original, and the 2010 Brit reboot. Never saw the reboot but I watched some of the original and loved it! If you can find it, check it out.

Yeah, I really liked Gosford Park, so started watching Downton Abbey, enjoyed the first season (with one maid getting a non-service job because her new employer's mother had been a maid and he knew how hard they worked, and the medical storyline with the doctor refusing expensive treatment to the farmer) but then the show just completely lost interest in anything where there was any opposition to the bosses.
