Disappointments and Surprises

What media that you were excited for disappointed you? What media ended up being far better than your expectations?

Pretty much everything Transformers related post-Bumblebee movie and post Lost Light comics has been a crushing disappointment for me. I think I'm actually done with the franchise now.

Godzilla Minus One surprised me though, went to see it just out of a ADD sense of completionistism, and didn't expect to enjoy it since it is basically everything I dislike in Godzilladom. It is a villain-zilla, a short-zilla, and a human story-zilla, all it was missing was a Kenny, but I really enjoyed it. The Legendary team could stand to take notes on how to shoot a Godzilla movie, without clouding the view with darkness or murky cg weather (although, I'd like them to continue with the mega-kaiju monster smackdown movies and a defender-Godzilla, just with better Godzilla shots).

Disappointed: Cap 3. Ugh. I actually believed the lies that they were going to make it better than the comic storyline (which I hate). No, they didn't. It was different but equally bad.

Rise of Skywalker.

Surprises: My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. Not my kind of movie, but I went with my mom so she had company. Turns out I actually enjoyed it. It was just fun.

Honor Among Thieves: It looked fun, yes. But I wasn't expecting it to be really, really good and to give me a new fandom.

I can't say I was disappointed by Rise of Skywalker, The Last Jedi had already pretty much set my expectations to zero by that point. Just a sense of weary confirmed skepticism for it.

Personally I loved The Last Jedi. To each their own. But for me it was my favorite of the sequels and had me anticipating what came next. And then TROS not only ruined that but ruined even parts of the OT. TROS is the only Star Wars movie I dislike.

Same. I came out of TLJ so fucking bored that when I went into TROS I wasn't expecting anything good and I ended up laughing my way through the movie. That being said you couldn't pay me to watch either of the last two sequel movies because they're just awful, my enjoyment began and ended with TFA for the new movies.

I didn't even watch TRoS because I hated TLJ so much. Didn't miss much from all I've heard. But I also can't say I hated it because I've never actually seen it.

I'll be bitter about Cap 3 for the rest of my life tbh, it should have been a smaller scale story focused on team Cap, but instead they attempted to retell one of the worst comic book stories that exists and it was every bit as bad.

+2 for Cap. I will never not be bitter about how dirty they did his character after they showed us how well they could do in Winter Soldier.

Cap 3... I probably would've liked it better had they not tried to make it Avengers 2.5. Not what I was expecting going in. (Not to say I didn't enjoy parts of it but the rest of it... ehhh.)

I finally watched The Nightmare Before Christmas (it's only been 30 years since its release). I'm sort of disappointed that I only thought it was okay. Only sort of because I almost expected it, which is why I think I've avoided watching it for so long. I was hoping I'd really like it, though (my friend loves it and it would have been nice to share that love with her).

I was pleasantly surprised by how watchable Snakes on a Plane was, I think it's exactly the film it wanted to be and am not sure why some people think it should be anything more. I also liked The Hunt more than I thought I would, but I can understand why there was a big to do about it (it was probably misunderstood on all sides, but that is always a risk with social satire). I only gave it a chance because of Betty Gilpin, and she did not disappoint.

Re: The Nightmare Before Christmas.
This is me with Beetlejuice. I watched it for the fist time last year and omg... I didn't even think it was OK, I kind of hated it. Can't admit it to my friends, though...

Negative:

Star Wars TLJ killed any interest I ever had in anything Star Wars related.
The Hobbit movies were pretty damn terrible and a huge disappointment, especially since I actually liked the LotR movies and had a certain confidence that Peter Jackson wouldn't fuck it up. He did.

Positive:
Any fleeting contact in had with anything LoL related ranged from "can't be bothered to be interested in this overhyped ugly game that I don't understand" to "get that batshit crazy fandom with its batshit crazy people away from me" so Arcane didn't seem like something I would be interested in but I really liked it a lot. And now I really dig the Heart Steel music video and connected short animations. Still zero interest in the actual game though.

When I first tried reading MDZS I thought I would never get into any of it, I couldn't remember the names (especially since people had SEVERAL) and things were kind of rocky. Fast forward a few years and I'm absolutely hooked on danmei novels.

With the Hobbit movies, it wasn't all or even mostly Jackson. The studio forced him to do certain things (like the romance triangle) after originally telling him he could do what he wanted. And he originally wanted 2 movies, but they insisted on 3. Not saying he's completely blameless, but the studio shoulders a lot of the blame.

Re: Disappointments and Surprises

(Anonymous) 2023-12-10 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I do actually kind of pity him because he got screwed over as well. It's just that a lot of the positive expectations were linked to him handling LotR fairly well so the disappointment remained the same, whether it was actually his fault or not.

Oh, yes. And he definitely has some of the blame. Just not all of it. Honestly LOTR has flaws too, in terms of being an adaption. But they are amazing movies nonetheless. It is sad that the Hobbit never got the adaption it deserved.

Re: Disappointments and Surprises

(Anonymous) 2023-12-11 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was kind of my issue: LotR wasn't a flawless adaptation but they worked great as the movies they were. The Hobbit was both a bad adaptation AND they weren't good movies.

He wasn't forced to shoot the movies in nauseavision or whatever the thing was that made the whole thing vertigo inducing was called. That was a major unforced error, plus the air-stepping elf scene.

Plus he put the breaks in a weird place. The second movie ought to have ended with them reaching The Lonely Mountain and not the breaching of it. Keep that for the final movie, and give the voyage through Mirkwood and contact with the Lake People more prominence. That makes Movie three a nonstop ride, you don't bogged down in it that way.

Oh I agree. He's not blameless. I'm just saying people talk as if he's the only one to blame when the studio has as much or more blame as him.

After years of my friends and partner raving about the Fallout games, I've spent the past week trying to get into Fallout 3 as a starting point. I'm a massive fan of the Elder Scrolls series, and everyone said "it's basically that but post-apocalyptic." Also I thought the TV trailer looked neat, so hey, why not get into the fandom?

I am so not having a good time. I'm really, really trying to like it, and I do really enjoy the whole lore/backstory, but in actual gameplay it just feels like it's fighting me every step of the way. Everything feels like a slog, I can appreciate the work that's gone into crafting a realistically "bombed out" world but I just don't feel motivated to actually explore any of it because it all looks like a big pile of garbage and that just doesn't excite me. I just keep running into little mechanics and snags that irritate me (I can't rest outside like in ES and have to shell out for a room, I get negative karma for stealing even though NOBODY WITNESSED ME STEALING)

Maybe it's time for me to accept that it's just not my bag, but I'm currently studying game dev and get bombarded with Fallout love and how well-made it is and I just don't get it.

I just feel really left out and like I'm missing something.

Tomorrowland. I went thinking, oh god, a Disney kids' movie, I'm just watching because Hugh, I wound up liking it a lot.

The first two Baldur's Gate games. My DM kept hyping them up as the pinnacle of western rpg. So when BG3 was announced I decided to check them out. I just could not get into the gameplay and gave up about an hour into the game for both of them.

Then, Pillars of Eternity was free on Epic, so I checked it out. My first thought was "oh, this looks like Baldur's Gate, I'm not gonna like this". But I ended up liking it so much I finished the game, bought the sequel on Steam and finished that too.

I wanted to like Tears of the Kingdom so much more than I did. I was so! Excited! for it, because I'd absolutely loved Breath of the Wild, and it looked like more of the same, but with extra bits added on! We got to roam Hyrule again, but with the sky was well this time!

And then I liked it, but just didn't love it. It's not a bad game, I just didn't think it was as good as BotW. They made a lot of baffling decisions with it that I either didn't like, or didn't care about, and it ended up being a rather tedious and disappointing experience.
