Soooo are people tagging everything just to try and get hits? I would be so annoyed.

That's what it sounds like. It reminds me of those weird YouTube videos that are tagged with long strings of random words in order to trick people into coming across them.

The tag abuse is a solid 70% of why I hate AO3, the other 30 is mostly the weird defensiveness of the site's fanbase though. Mainly it is the tag abuse and wall of tags that makes it nigh impossible to filter stuff. They seriously need to reboot their whole tagging system, just from the ground up.

OK, more AO3 for me.

To be fair, that's not an AO3 problem, that's a user/culture problem. This stuff wasn't so bad when I was using the site a decade ago -- or not in the fandoms I'd read in then, at least. Now, however? Now that everyone uses Twitter (pfft X), Instagram and heaven knows which other social media that has gotten people used to the idea of spamming tags just for maximizing visibility as something acceptable? Now it's gone to hell.

I just wish I understood the logic behind tagging every single thing on Earth because the only thing it accomplishes, at least to me, is to get that author muted or blocked.

Then again, I've already crept into certain authors' comment sections as innocent as can be to ask them why the pairing or character I was interested in didn't show up in the story despite being tagged -- and that approach got me a victory as I got the author to remove the incorrect tags without too much of a hassle. Problem is I really don't have the time or patience to do this to every single nuisance clogging up the tags with their bollocks... But I guess it is absolutely fair for readers to complain. After all, here's someone trying to sell me baloney in place of the quality meat I signed up for, lol; if we can complain at a restaurant, we should be able to complain in an inconsiderate author's comment section as well and they have no right to find any issue with it as they screwed up first...

I blame Instagram.

Arent all the tag wranglers volunteers?

Yes.
