Is she trying to exorcise some sort of insecurity she has with that? She's apparently been divorced three times, which is...you know, kind of a lot. Does she think if she'd just been better able to be a "traditional" wife that one of her marriages might have survived, and she winds up writing that kind of woman?

Or did her husbands leave her for more career-driven women, and she's upset about it? I've come across that before.

Who knows... I wasn't aware of her personal life, though. This dynamic of putting some women on a pedestal while tearing others down is not unheard of in real life and fiction. It's just disappointing that she's an okay writer in many respects, but the characterization is very sexist.
