When it comes to fanfic, first person pretty much almost always fails to capture the voice of the character involved. When it comes to original fic, unless the author is very, very, good you get a voice that tends to come across as a little detached and bland, because often the character diverges very little from the author themselves. You always seem to see when the character is doing something the author hates.

George MacDonald Fraser and Sandy Mitchell are good authors who manage to dodge that, but only because their characters are so wildly over the top that they were never in any danger of that happening to start with. Ben Aaronovitch is an example of an author who started good, but his 1st person character soon sort of devolved into a smarter than thou author tract.

Same for me. If it's fanfic, it's really really hard to match the voice of the established character and a vanishingly small amount of writers pull it off. For original fic, it's hard to make them a character in their own right and not just either third person with the pronouns changed or obvious Mary/Marty Stus. My favorite first person author these days is Andy Weir.

Have you read the Murderbot books? That is definitely one of the good exceptions for me.

And of course memoirs or autobiographies in general.

AYRT

I tried, but I couldn't get into it, which makes me sad cause everyone seems to really like it and on paper it sounds right up my alley. :(

Third person omniscient will almost always make me put the book down. I just can't connect to any of the characters if I'm not closely following any of them.
