I do not like first person but for very different reasons! I can't seem to really connect with the story or the characters when its first pov. It also nearly always seems more juvenile.

And I get resentful too because it seems like so many interesting stories these days end up being forst person and I miss out!

When it comes to fanfic, first person pretty much almost always fails to capture the voice of the character involved. When it comes to original fic, unless the author is very, very, good you get a voice that tends to come across as a little detached and bland, because often the character diverges very little from the author themselves. You always seem to see when the character is doing something the author hates.

George MacDonald Fraser and Sandy Mitchell are good authors who manage to dodge that, but only because their characters are so wildly over the top that they were never in any danger of that happening to start with. Ben Aaronovitch is an example of an author who started good, but his 1st person character soon sort of devolved into a smarter than thou author tract.

Third person, omniscient, in past tense, is always the way to go. Third person, limited, can work sometimes though.

Literature graduate who always hated first-person POV fiction here. I do read it occasionally if it's an author recognised by canon but even then it can be grating (take Poe, for example. Of course there's a reason behind such a narrative choice, but it gets tiresome after a certain amount of time).

Contemporary authors, though? Never. They seem to be much worse in the Hey Look At Me, I Am So Special department and it seems that nobody born after 1920 is able to pull off first-person in a way that isn't completely insipid -- nor do they seem to understand how unreliable narrators really work, exaggerating everything about the mechanism and turning it into something completely ineffective in the end.

First-person is extremely hard to pull off and its prevalence in a lot of contemporary fiction today is mind-boggling given how few authors actually put it to good use...

I love first person POV. When done right, it feels like a friend telling me a story. When done wrong, it’s irritating because I don’t want to spend any more time “listening” to the character. I’ve never seen it done right in fics though.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-14 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of it is off-putting to me because it feels like its intent is to immerse me as the reader more fully into the story and character, but if I don't like or don't get the character, it can feel incredibly othering to me. And sometimes, even if I do like/get the character, I'm not sure I want that level of immediacy when bad things happen to them.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-14 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
First person done well is terrific - Rivers of London and Piranesi are two good examples. Unfortunately, it's very, very easy to do badly and lazily in exactly the way the secret says, which I think is why it's so often POV of choice for YA novels. Done well, it's an invitation into this particular world and worldview and really fascinating. Done badly, it's like being trapped on public transport while the world's most annoying person monologues at you about their life.

I tend not to like first person for similar reasons: it typically comes across as far too narrow and self-absorbed.

That said, I think it can work if the author leans into those aspects of it, or if there's some aspect of the narrative itself that makes it appropriate. Take historical fiction: first-person can suggest that you're sitting with an elder, listening to them relay their experience of significant events, of bygone eras, of cultures that time has altered. I'm reading 'Cloudsplitter' at the moment, and the first-person POV works on all these fronts. It's historical fiction, and the central figure is writing to a reporter who'd asked about his life, and his younger self has this degree of self-importance to him, this lack of self-awareness, that I'm not sure would come across as well if it were third-person.

YA, also, is perfect for it, because (and I'm not intending any shade, here) its audience tends to be self-absorbed, and because I suspect it makes it easier for them to see themselves in the main character.

For me it is I can't seem to immerse myself in the story when it is in first person (or second person). What I especially love about fantasy and scifi is the ability to immerse myself in this world. And for me that only works with third person.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-14 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
It works if the writer is willing to write a character who is completely out of their depth and struggling to keep up with events. It fails when they make the POV character too competent and knowledgeable.

For some reason, I'm fine reading classical novels written in the first person, but not fanfictions. And I don't think I'd like modern novels with this POV either.

This doesn't seem very fandom, but mood. It's still jarring to me when anyone who I'd consider my peer has children, and I'm in my late 20s. I KNOW people my age have kids sometimes, this has been true for like ten years, but it's still like, what?? Why???

Another CNovel I've been reading has joined the "you can only continue to read the FTL with proof of purchase" ranks. But despite understanding that the original author should be supported I refuse to do it.Not just because installing the Chinese app with which to buy it is a serious hassle in my country (which it is).

Not just because you can only pre-pay a much higher amount via PayPal to that app than you actually need for the novel (which is annoying and sketchy). And not because it's weird for illegal FTLers to be on such a moral high horse about this (which is an argument I've read a few times but don't necessarily agree with).

It's because all PoP novel FTLs that I've seriously considered doing this for have gotten an official release, most halfway through being fully translated and I refuse to pay for a version I can't actually read when the official version will be expensive enough and I don't want to pay for it twice.

Yeah I couod see how fandom would fawn and give you the wrong imoression. Yet another reason I like to go into TM blind.

She definitely came off rather daft to me. I had to go look up some if her other stuff to see if she really was that dim and daft or if it was an exaggeration just for the show. I'm still not aure which it is.

I am fascinated with her accent though.
