There's always an audience... and there's always a critic.

The people who don't like 1st person POV are gonna stay away anyway.

If you're really concerned if your narrator sounds natural or real, I guess you can check with the source material (if fanfic) or just think really hard about what kind of person they are (if original) and how you want them expressing themselves, how they might react (internally or externally) to situations, etc.

You could also make peace with the current situation. You don't have to make changes just because some folks who aren't interested in it anyway aren't appeased.
