What's Your 'Alternative' Christmas Music?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-14 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Songs/music that are not the usual xmas ones that get played - or maybe not even Christmassy at all and just your choice to play during this season?

I sometimes make a winter mix playlist of video game tunes. Like, snow/ice stages and such.

I've been trying to find emo/metal/rock Christmas songs after listening to the Nightmare Before Christmas revisited album. A few faves:

Yule Shoot Your Eye Out by Fall Out Boy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW3X7-gk8q0

Lyric Noel metal version of Carol of the Bells

Darcy the Dragon by Roger Whittaker is a must on my Holiday playlists. Its a Christmas song but it isn't on most popular lists I see. It is a weird little song and I love it.

I have a few Solstice songs in my playlist I really like.

But one of my favorite lesser known songs for the holiday season is The Maine Christmas Song by Malinda Liberty. Its just such a funny little Maine thing and will always remind me of "home", even though I haven't lived there for a decade now.

I have an entire play list of punk/rock xmas songs, like Christmas Night of the Living Dead by MxPx, and I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus by Stand Still, among many others.

Satirical: Tom Lehrer’s “A Christmas Carol”

It’s a fun medley of classic Christmas tunes set to his classic satirical lyrics. I always love his snark and sense of rhythm and rhyme.

Do neurotypical people send their friends pictures or videos of things they like?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-14 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I've been told this is an autistic thing? Like, autistic people send their friends pictures or videos to tell them that they love them, but NT people don't?

That seems...odd?

Re: Do neurotypical people send their friends pictures or videos of things they like?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-14 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
That is a normal thing to do with friends. It more depends on the friendship than anything else. Most of the texts with my siblings consists of videos and pictures and gifs.

Re: Do neurotypical people send their friends pictures or videos of things they like?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-14 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
There's no such thing as a strictly autistic thing that no neurotypical people ever do. There's only things that autistic people tend to be more likely to do on average, and things that are done to a stronger or more compulsive degree when you're autistic. On that note, sending pictures of things you like to friends is common for neurotypical people.

I do this a lot and I’m not autistic.

Re: Do neurotypical people send their friends pictures or videos of things they like?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-14 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. It is the most neurotypical behavior there is. It is trying to stop them doing so that is the challenge.

Re: Do neurotypical people send their friends pictures or videos of things they like?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-14 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Whoever told you that is very strange.

Re: Do neurotypical people send their friends pictures or videos of things they like?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-14 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
it's so wild to me, the things people think only autistic people do. There's been an uptick of that kind of content, people doing the most basic things and treating it like it's something only autistic (or people with ADHD or OCD) people do, and every time, I'm like, "damn, neurotypicals apparently don't do anything lol."

Re: Do neurotypical people send their friends pictures or videos of things they like?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-14 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
If you have a very niche special interest, like plastic coffee stirrers or store-branded ketchup packets, and that is the subject of all the videos/pictures that you’re sending your friends, that might be an autistic thing.

This seems like an "Autistic people breath" kind of thing. Like, yes, but also plenty of other people do it too. All the time even.

First-person narration done well

(Anonymous) 2023-12-14 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Inspired by #1. I totally get where OP is coming from, since I've seen many bad examples of first-person narration. But I've also seen great ones. A few from my recent reading history:

The Blind Assassin, by Margaret Atwood
Demon Copperhead, by Barbara Kingsolver
Out of Darkness, Shining Light, by Petina Gappah
The Sellout, by Paul Beatty
The Sympathizer, by Viet Thanh Nguyen
Whiskey When We're Dry, by John Larison

Writer of First Person

(Anonymous) 2023-12-14 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Secret 1 has me anxious now. How would I keep my narrator from coming off.. idk insufferable, self obsessed or, just obnoxious? I guess it's stupid and smacks of self consciousness to post this but aughhh...
