First person done well is terrific - Rivers of London and Piranesi are two good examples. Unfortunately, it's very, very easy to do badly and lazily in exactly the way the secret says, which I think is why it's so often POV of choice for YA novels. Done well, it's an invitation into this particular world and worldview and really fascinating. Done badly, it's like being trapped on public transport while the world's most annoying person monologues at you about their life.

Rivers of London started well, but Peter's voice quickly became sanctimonious and preachy. And the other viewpoint characters in subsequent books have basically the same "voice" just with different bits of background bolted onto them.

Re: sanctimonious, I’m not sure precisely what you mean. Maybe my tolerance is just higher. In the right mood, I do still enjoy many of the preachy rousing speeches of The West Wing.

Do you have any examples of specific areas/topics/books/scenes?

AYRT I agree that the other voices are very samey, but I disagree about the sanctimonious and preachy. If anything, I was relieved that his descriptions of younger women stopped focusing largely on whether or not they were hot.

Yes! I was glad that really toned down after the second book.

Really don't see what you are on about. He is sarcastic to everyone including himself and a bit traumatized. And yes, a lot less ah horny in later books. But to each their own I guess.
