I worked in bookselling for twenty years, and I second all this. It was new bookselling, so we didn't get the people bringing in damaged books to sell to us (or not very often.) We did get people using us as a library, damaging the books and making it impossible for actual buyers to look at them for hours at a stretch, trying to return books with receipts from other bookstores, and of course the academics who descended like hungry locusts every time we held a wine and cheese.

I loved bookselling. Mostly.
