I have some friends in Canada who only recently bought a house, as they bounced around rented houses in their area for several years. Even though they didn't live in a major metropolitan area, it was still pretty common for average size houses to run around half a million CAD. Likewise, SomeOrdinaryGamers (who is Canadian) touches on housing prices a bit in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Orx4itr1n4Y

As a Canadian who lives in one of the most expensive cities, average rent for a one bedroom is about $2500 and you're unlikely to get a condo under $500k unless it's in shitty shape or a bad area, and houses are very rare under $800k.
