I don't know about OP but I mean, the show is the same age as me. I have been watching it my whole life. Replacing Carl and Dr. Hibbert feels a little like losing...eh, not a pet, but like a piece of my childhood?

Mm, I feel you-- The Simpsons hasn't been around my entire life, but I don't have a whole lot of, like... MEMORY from before it was on the air! I grew up watching it, and I DO have that nostalgic response. But like... growing up, it never would have occurred to me that Carl and Dr Hibbert were being voiced by white actors taking up roles that *could* have gone to Black actors!

I haven't gone back to watching the show since it jumped my personal shark, though I hear it is good again. When I rewatch old ones, it'll be from the earlier seasons. I AM glad that they're looking at race not just in terms of perpetuating stereotypes/racial bullying but like... in terms of who is getting paid to be those characters! I genuinely am! But... in my head, those characters sound the way they always did in my childhood.

New!Marshmallow has been in one scene of one episode of Bob's Burgers. I think maybe it's a little soon to judge whether she's good or not?

To me, it's a complicated subject. The creators of Bojack Horseman voiced their regret in not casting Diane with a Vietnamese actress, calling it their "original sin," but knew well it would not sit well with neither the fanbase nor the VA if they suddenly changed her. Later on, they'd make an episode noting how Diane tried to find her own roots in Vietnam for her own identity, only to come out empty.

As a creator, I agree that giving minority actors an opportunity is important in order to let themselves and their own minority have a voice of their own. And hell, a cynical part of me says it would also be cheaper than AAA actors. But likewise, when a VA lands into the role simply because they work well, or has been for too long and remains an upstanding figure and is central to the character, I'd be real hesitant to remove them.
