First, fandom really needs to understand that it is not the only, or the main audience for Doctor Who. Outside of fandom, Tennant was and is the most popular of the new Doctors. Bringing Tennant and Catherine Tate back was pretty much guaranteed to bring back viewers for the 60th. Which it did.

Second, the Specials allowed RTD to wrap up the Doctor's emotional storyline going forward. The Doctor's character needed a reset. The Specials did that--it left all the emotional baggage of past Doctors behind with Fourteen, so Fifteen begins with a new slate. I wasn't thrilled about Tennant coming back either, but I thought the Specials did an excellent job of passing the baton.

I have nothing against bringing him back, but I did groan at them still KEEPING him to probably pull him out of the hat AGAIN in the future.

Personally I'd rather watch something trying to tell a good story than appeal to the broadest possible audience. Besides, there are already well-established better ways of bringing back past Doctors in the show, and normal regeneration already works as a reset. It was not necessary or good writing to bring back Tennant in the way RTD did, doesn't mean I wouldn't have been thrilled to have him back (and maybe another Doctor or two!) for the 60th in a different way.

Assuming that Tennant isn't hanging around during the actual episodes of the actual series - and we have no reason to think that he will be hanging around then - then I don't have any issue with this way of bringing a Doctor back or regenerating a Doctor.
