Yeah, mostly Okcupid. I haven't used that many other dating sites* but I like how much information it lets you put on your profile and the questions thing, helpful for prescreening people who won't be into my whole deal. Usually people message me first, sometimes I message them if they seem particularly interesting. Chat for just long enough to see if the vibes are ok, then if they don't ask first, I ask if they want to meet up for coffee/drinks/something like that and go from there. I've found several cool people that way. Admittedly tho I am looking for like, t4t poly fwb kinda situations so I have no clue how it works if you're not doing that.

*Tinder and Grindr mainly. Would not recommend those unless you're just trying to get mediocre quality dick asap

I've only used them for hookups, I know a few people who have met their s/o through apps or dating sites though and I originally met my partner online before eventually moving in together (not through a dating site, through fandom, haha). I've never had a bad experience, I try to feel out the vibe before meeting up and end conversations that feel off to me. I also tell my partner (we are polyamorous) or another trusted person the location I'm going to, just in case something goes really wrong. I do strongly recommend telling a trusted person where you're going and/or meeting in a public place for the first time, and never be afraid to cut things short if you aren't feeling right about it. This applies just as much for dates as for hookups. Your safety and emotional wellbeing are the biggest priority!
