Nah, "cool girls wear tampons" happened because tampons were killing women with toxic shock syndrome, and they needed a way to get women to buy them again once the tweaked the chemical composition. It was the 80s.

that "cool girls wear tampons" nonsense went around in the 70's too and toxic shock was unknown then....

I'm just speaking from experience of what my female peers had to say about it.

That may be the message women took from it, but it wasn't the motive or the intended message.

This was the message I internalized too - you don't want to put something up your vagina, well you're an immature baby because you definitely aren't going to have sex, ever.

I mean we all knew about toxic shock syndrome but my experience was that we got warned about it so as not to leave a tampon in too long, not to forgo it entirely. That also led to a feeling that cool girls went around wearing ticking time bombs and didn't care because they were so cool, and they were also so smart and responsible that they could be trusted to take the risk but be fine.

God, how fucked up we got just for them to sell us hygiene products.
