(Anonymous) 2023-12-28 03:16 am (UTC)(link)I saw this reflected in media frequently in the next decade. Saved by the Bell, Beverly Hills 90210, Sister Kate, and Family Matters are just the shows I can name off the top of my head that reinforced that. The commercials for the products did the same with the costuming and set choices. Seventeen, Cosmo, and Vogue were the big magazines that everyone read and they were filled with ads and columns that solidified the same view. Books aimed at teen girls written between the 60s and 80s had it, too. I’d moved on to regular adult fiction by the 90s but I’d be willing to bet the books for teens then also had that BS in there. My mother included it with The Talk and her mother did the same when she got her first period in the early 50s.
