I’ve been told the idea behind Turnip 28 is to do something as parodically shitdark as 40K was supposed to be.

So many people took Warhammer 40K seriously, though! I remember its really unpleasant fans right back in the early 90s going on about how any series with war that wasn't this dark was just FAKE and GIRLY. I was very surprised to find out later that a lot of people have fun with it, and good for them!

I don’t normally use this phrase, but you could easily say that GW sold out. They made a joke, and people who took it seriously turned out to be a paying audience, so they pivoted more to that audience.
