The reaction to him not liking this stuff really bothers me because even as a superhero enjoyer I am also an overall film enjoyer and...the backlash makes me think he really has a point actually. It's frustrating sometimes when I want to go to the cinema but the original film I had heard was out this week isn't playing locally for longer than 48 hours (and I'm at work) but all 15 screens in my nearest city cinema are whatever big budget thing is out at the moment.

And it's when I read stuff like I did years ago such as people getting salty that Infinity War didn't get nominated for serious awards. I am not ashamed of enjoying things of the "it ain't that deep" variety so c'mon people. If you're acting like it's this big horrible thing to not get awards validation that almost says more about you!

I know this is all old af stuff for me to be complaining about but I just really hate that they won't leave people like Scorcese alone on this. Sure his films may not be everyone's cup of tea but him saying he doesn't care for Batman or Iron Man...it really doesn't have to be a big deal and journalists/media types are really showing that they're trying to manufacture outrage to sustain their nothing careers with this shit. Pissing off male nerds in particular is the easiest shit in the world.

scorsese doesn't hate superhero movies, scorsese hates disney's control on production (he actually never mentions the dceu specifically from what i've seen). he's very forthright that he believes in auteur theory (he wrote a whole article about it regarding the superhero topic that apparently nobody read), and he thinks that disney's control on production means that directors are barely present in the final product, which works against what cinema is to him, a director. for him, assembly line movies aren't cinema because the very core of cinema to him is the unique perspective (of the director, lol). like i'd bet at least a little money that he'd be a little complimentary about matt reeve's batman...because people keep attaching matt reeves to it in reference rather than the DCEU. you can see also this because he's way more complimentary about nolan than he needs to be considering nolan is one of the primogenitors of the comic book movie trend that he doesn't like (except....he's fine with nolan because his batman movies are his)!

he absolutely refuses to say disney explicitly just "Marvel" though which seems cowardly to me because he clearly has a problem in general with disney's specific production practices. maybe he just hates feige lmao. and for that reason, i agree, i wish people would stop asking him about it.

Ugh. Scorsese is just so rude about it. It is one thing to not like them. But to insist they shouldn't exist and only high art movies should exist is just rude. He's just really insulting to people who like pure entertainment movies. He just really rubs me the wrong way.

If anyone here hasn't, his opinion piece following this up is very much worth reading. (I forgot how to make links so here is the non-paywalled version via Internet Archive, copy-paste for viewing: https://web.archive.org/web/20191105034518/https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/04/opinion/martin-scorsese-marvel.html )

He made the equivalent of an "Old Man Yells At Cloud" comment and so many people jump on him like he's the Arbiter of Movies. And the responses from some of the people who are in the MCU were so vapid. Robert Downey Jr stating that MCU movies are cinema because they plan in movie theaters. So TV movies aren't? Anything that plays in a movie theater in cinema, including those weird churches that broadcast their services? Give that answer a little more thought.

I agree. Let the people who don't like superhero films/franchise filming keep making what they make and leave those questions off the list. It's easy ragebait for fandom culture that has become a monster of its' own.

I was actually surprised that people reacted so negatively to Martin Scorsese's response to his thoughts on superhero films.

He's a man whose passion for filmmaking goes really deep. His work is prolific and he got into the Hollywood industry when it was transforming into a more art driven market than a crowd pleasing driven market.

But given a bit more time to consider, it shouldn't be surprising that fans reacted terribly to his thoughts. They're used to the idealized fan/creator relationship that is normalized a bit in fandom culture. Creators and actors going to cons to connect with fans. Some actors/creators going to social media spaces to talk about their projects, etc.

I just think people reacting strongly to Martin Scorsese's opinions are really not seeing where he is coming from and they need to go out and get to know themselves more (especially if they are legitimately angry at his opinions on superhero films).

There's more to life that having your hobbies be well liked.

Posts like this come across as more gatekeepy than some of the actual gatekeepers. I'm sorry people didn't like what you liked, and dared say so. Just let them enjoy the bit they did enjoy. Also, you're coming across as pretty ageist.

Do you know what a gatekeeper is? Hint 1: you sound like one. Hint 2: “I pretend that this objectively bad movie/plot/scene/loophole doesn’t exist,” isn’t gatekeeping. And Star Wars is full of objectively bad stuff, which shows the power of subjectivity; fans who are ok with something done this way but not ok with the exact same thing being done that way are more common in Star Wars fandom than any other I’ve seen.

I take a lot of solace in the fact that ten, fifteen, twenty years from now, kids who loved the movies will give standing ovations to the stars of the sequels. While the people who hated the films look on with shocked Pikachu faces wondering why Kelly Marie Tran and John Boyega are being cheered at for over a minute straight. It still brings a smile to my face remembering the tears in Hayden Christensen's eyes when that happened to him.

I was a kid when the prequels came out and while Star Wars wasn't my favorite thing, I did enjoy the movies well enough to have podracing Anakin on my birthday cake one year.

As an adult, I enjoy knowing about the world and talking about it with close friends, but because of the rampant gatekeeping, I have zero interest in ever learning anything more. Why would I get invested in a story when someone is just going to shit on what I enjoyed?

I’ve been told the idea behind Turnip 28 is to do something as parodically shitdark as 40K was supposed to be.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-31 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
So many people took Warhammer 40K seriously, though! I remember its really unpleasant fans right back in the early 90s going on about how any series with war that wasn't this dark was just FAKE and GIRLY. I was very surprised to find out later that a lot of people have fun with it, and good for them!

I haven't been into Britpop for a very long time because it was so hostile! You were supposed to pick sides and deride other bands/performers. Sad to see it hasn't changed.

I owe a lot to the Blue Oyster Bar, too! I was a hapless queer kid in a very conservative small town, there weren't a lot of vehicles for me to discover what the greater world might include-- I didn't even know who and what *I* was.

Favorite Holiday 2023 Gift

F!S, what's a gift you received this season that knocked your socks off?

For me, it's a book from my husband about the Hartford Whalers. Totally unexpected, and so far a super fun (and nostalgic) read!
