The reaction to him not liking this stuff really bothers me because even as a superhero enjoyer I am also an overall film enjoyer and...the backlash makes me think he really has a point actually. It's frustrating sometimes when I want to go to the cinema but the original film I had heard was out this week isn't playing locally for longer than 48 hours (and I'm at work) but all 15 screens in my nearest city cinema are whatever big budget thing is out at the moment.

And it's when I read stuff like I did years ago such as people getting salty that Infinity War didn't get nominated for serious awards. I am not ashamed of enjoying things of the "it ain't that deep" variety so c'mon people. If you're acting like it's this big horrible thing to not get awards validation that almost says more about you!

I know this is all old af stuff for me to be complaining about but I just really hate that they won't leave people like Scorcese alone on this. Sure his films may not be everyone's cup of tea but him saying he doesn't care for Batman or Iron Man...it really doesn't have to be a big deal and journalists/media types are really showing that they're trying to manufacture outrage to sustain their nothing careers with this shit. Pissing off male nerds in particular is the easiest shit in the world.

Agree on so much of this! Personally I was burned out on superhero movies pretty early on, so the many experiences of the nearest 3-5 cinemas only showing the latest MCU or DC movie were even more aggravating for me. Throw in all the MCU fans who take it as a personal insult if you don’t engage in conversation about the movies and who become downright hostile if you say it’s because they don’t interest you and it’s the perfect recipe for making someone who doesn’t care suddenly care a whole lot, just not in the way the fans want.
Gotta say, the sweet schadenfreude of the fans turning on themselves and then the creators keeps me warm at night.

I hear you. I love(d) the MCU, I defended it for a long time (while also recognising that it isn't epic cinema, just as Scorcese said it is themepark like in its approach - that's ok if it's what you want though!) But some of the fanbase can be off-putting and there ARE problems with how things have ended up. In fact, I'm amused at some of the complaining acting like it's a recent problem because some of the weaknesses were definitely already there in the Infinity Saga.

Basically the MCU has reached the same problem the exists in the comics for both Marvel and DC. Just too much lore. Blow it all up and start over. In 10 years.

The one good thing about the tide turning is that maybe there might be more variety on offer in small to medium sized multiplexes again. Now if only we could sort out some of the bad behaviour from patrons (phone use during the main feature is my major bugbear.)

My closest Cineworld will ask phone users to leave.
I’ve enjoyed seeing trailers for films lately, there is a wide variety coming out in the next year or two. It’s very refreshing!

Cosigned. By the time I hear about a new film it's out of local theatres or only playing at weird times that I can't make because of work. And I am burnt out on superheroes and want to see some decent indie shit.

I'm with you on the thing re: certain movies only running for a weekend (or week), or not at all, while they show the 'blockbuster' for a couple months. My only local theater also goes so far as to show those stupid, Xian 'kid died and saw heaven and came back to tell everybody' inspirational movies and that conspiracy-theory Hillary Clinton thing. YUCK.

These are very much my thoughts as well, like I never got the ridiculous outcry over Sorcese's description of MCU movies because it was accurate, they're action movies and action movies are very much the movie-equivalent of rollercoasters and that's okay! But there are very loud segments of the fandom that just cannot handle any crit of them and act like they're high art when they've always been silly superhero movies, and I like them that way, they're not made to win awards(bar costuming or music) and there's nothing wrong with that.

Ugh the cinema thing is extra annoying when you live in a small town because the window to catch movies that aren't a blockbuster is stupidly tiny, me and my gf had to go see Godzilla Minus One at 10 am on the 22nd because after a week the local cinemas decided that everything needed to be Aquaman 2 and Wonka, like please, let me watch other things!

I almost added the rollercoaster thing to my comment because I BLOODY LOVE rollercoasters. They're amazing! I hated the build up to going on them and even hate elements of being on them but the adrenaline rush during and afterwards...it's fantastic. It's not a bad thing for a movie-going experience to be the same thing. I never felt like people like Scorcese were saying that's bad, just that it's only one aspect of film making and if that's all there is then it's not good. Just like I don't spend my entire life during my free time going on rollercoasters, I seek out other experiences as well for a well-rounded life.

It says it all that even a Godzilla film is so restricted (something you would think would mean multiple screens because of the subject matter) and you have to pick your moment. Urgh. It would be just so nice to have a dozen options for a film rather than two huge things three-four times a day and MAYBE something a bit more obscure but only two showings across the entire day.
