Legit question to people who don't find this sad: What is it about this that doesn't work for you?

I'm curious to know why it doesn't work for some people where it seems to have hit quite the spot for a lot of people.

FTR, I found the episode effective (can't recall if it made me cry but chances are it did because I cry easily, much more so when I was younger), but I wasn't a big fan of Futurama. I liked the show but never bothered to keep up. I would catch random episodes from time to time, mostly when my brothers would be watching it on TV. I think it's a well written episode, especially because I tend to like storytelling in movies and tv shows where a lot can be said with no words. And this episode's ending delivered so much in that regard.

It's just very, very "very special episode".

4 seasons in, we're introduced to a character we've never been given any indication ever existed before. Then we're given one episode, where he's basically a prop for Fry, to get to care about him. Then, the final scene is so blatantly manipulative, from the "ironic twist" of Fry choosing not to resurrect him thinking he'd forgotten him in the decade he lived after his freezing, to the sad music, just undermined itself by verging on parody.

Because Fry travelled back in time and lived with Seymour until he was fossilized!

Ngl I HATED that retcon. I was sad about the way Jurassic Bark ends but it didn't mean I wanted the writers to come up with some time travel nonsense to have the best of both worlds. I know this is a fantasy world where you can change whatever you want if you want to write it, but it really ruined the emotional punch when they decided to do what they did with Bender's Big Score.

I can't remember, was that Fry, or was that the copy (Lars)?

(I guess the dog wouldn't care either way though...)

It was Lars, but he was still Fry until Seymour died.
