I don't remember which creator it was, might have been Abroad in Japan, did a q&a once and openly admitted that once he started doing the stupid-looking clickbaity thumbnails, his reach and engagement metrics skyrocketed - he hates them and agrees they're stupid but for some dumb reason they work. I think a lot of youtubers find that out and that's why stupid shit keeps creeping into their content. Maybe they don't want to do it but the hard data shows more clicks and more finishing-the-video stats when they do it, and so they sigh and put on the stupid hat.

Is it really any different in the end than Sweeps Week sitcom stunts to get high ratings on TV?

I mean, the obvious difference is that it's Sweeps Week. When Youtubers make those clickbaity changes for more traffic, they're doing it for longer than a week, yeah?
