What might look like a "bit of fun" to some might indeed come across as cruel to others. The joking worked for you; that doesn't mean it worked for everyone.

That has nothing to do with whether a joke lands or not for different viewers. It can, however, make the character making that joke look like an asshole to a lot of viewers.

Nah. It's not weird for other people to see things differently than you. What is weird, and obnoxious, is to insist that everyone has to see things the way you do, and that no one is ever allowed to criticize anything you happen to like.
