Tendi learns about Christmas, this super cool old Earth holiday where everyoone gets a gift from all their bestest friends, and sets out to bring it to the Cerritos crew. Naturally her first stop is with Doctor T'Ana and T'Lyn, meanwhile Shaxs is doing some performance reviews and finds out about Krampus and, wouldn't you know it, but Boimler's review needs improvement.

There, flesh that one out.

Episode ends with Ransom making an offhand mention of the Easter Bunny... here we go again.

Mariner thinks it is dumb, because she is a textbook case of Oppositional Defiance Disorder, and says she prefers Hogmanay because she knew Scotty...somehow -references to the episode Relics go here-... and just wants to get drunk, but for culture. Meanwhile Rutherford plays the voice of reason by saying there are lots of old Earth customs that they no longer participate in, and kinda blends them altogether, whilst Billups spends the episode becoming increasingly irate with everyone for the shenanigans before revealing at the end that it is because Hysperia, the renn-faire planet he is from, still celebrates Yule in a big way and he always hated it.

AYRT

The point isn't that you can't make it work narratively in universe. The point is that on a meta level elevating Christmas over other holidays cheapens Star Trek's appeals to universality. Now, if v there was a special episode for va bunch of other holidays, that would be better.

That is why it works in Lower Decks, and only Lower Decks. They use meta as their canvas, and other holidays have been mentioned. US Thanksgiving is mentioned waaaaaay back in Charlie X during Those Old Scientists era, with Kirk being upset the Enterprise's galley can only serve meatloaf. And other Trek has mentioned First Contact Day.
And I just went back to check Memory Alpha, and Christmas has been mentioned in Trek before too. DS Nine, TNG, and Voy have all done Christmas.
