I've been talking to some Japanese people and there's a lot of nuance missing from the English version that's hard to get across, but basically, you need to keep in mind his expanded backstory and that the overall story of Awakening is one of agency and lacking it, then the story of the worshiped god of death being worshiped as one of annihilation and whose followers don't even ask what he might want and instead force the matter, then he becomes kinda sympathetic. If the only choices you're offered are "do the thing or we'll force you" after being categorically abused and nearly killed at every turn for just existing, then I'd probably go, "Fuck it, level it all" too. Doesn't make what he does right, but one of his formative experiences is his own creator/father (Forneus) trying to kill him for... Violent thoughts. From an infant, basically. Then Alm and Celica showing up years later and trying to kill him for no real reason other than he was there. Like, Jesus, no wonder he turned out Like That.
