I think it's a pretty natural reaction to the drama and bullying about five years ago around drawing characters too light.

It also sucks, for reasons you've expressed. In a better world we'll have so many characters of color and so much fan art of them that we won't be able to notice any trends like this.

Meanwhile, I save my ire for the way comic book characters tend to shift lighter in official works. Fan artists don't owe me anything but canon materials should at least be consistent if they want my cash.
