People do this in my current fandom and I was so confused at first! It was like the artists were gaslighting me, I had to actually go back and look at pictures to make sure I wasn't just misremembering.

It sounds completely stupid but that's probably what's going through their heads because they've never actually examined what makes a POC a POC deeper than extreme surface level "color"

I think it might just be “I have dark skin, and these characters are awesome, so I’ll give these characters dark skin.” Which I suppose is a fair impulse, haha.

I use to be in the Sanders Sides fandom, where all the characters are played by one white guy - and the fandom brainrot take that developed was 'If you refuse to draw this character as another race in a human AU, then you're a racist.'

I know a good chunk of the fandom are on the young side and were thinking that they were creating diversity for the greater good, while a few POC fans were saying they wanted to see their favorite character/s like them - but god damn.

Hahaha, this reminds me of when Legend of Korra came out and people were so mad that Noatak was darker as a child but lighter-skinned as an adult...when the man was wearing a mask and covering every inch of skin for years. As a light-skinned POC who was much darker in their youth, I was very confused by the anger.

Yeah, I've seen people drawing Jewish and Roma characters in particular much, much darker than their canon colouring. Didn't we all learn something from those poor kids taken from their families in Ireland, Greece and Bulgaria because they were "too fair" to be Roma so obviously they were kidnapped white kids?

Oh my GOSH this drove me crazy years ago when people were doing this with Cassian Andor (yes, it's me, the anon who can't shut up about Cassian Andor). There were posts shaming people for drawing him with his actual skin color: "is he white? No? THEN WHY ARE YOU DRAWING HIM WHITE???" The "progressive" thing to do was to draw him darker, which on its face was so, dare I say, problematic. Apart from the fact that it involved conflating "Mexican" with "dark skin," from this ignorant, Americentric notion that a) Latino is a race; and b) that Mexico is racially homogeneous (it's not! It's a pretty fucking diverse country!), it also involved overlooking the fact that Diego Luna is half British. Not saying having a British mother necessarily makes someone "white," but treating the white portion of someone's heritage as automatically and completely irrelevant is some one-drop shit.

A lot of the Discourse on race in fandom is so fucked. You peek just beneath the surface, and you find all this essentialism, all this flattening of identities, all this reliance on stereotypes and on American conceptions of race and ethnicity that don't apply elsewhere in the world, and often don't even apply in the US, but are instead used to force people into narrow categories that reinforce the troublesome structures we're supposed to be dismantling. "Members of X group are supposed to be look like this, and act like that; and when they don't, I will make sure that they do." Man, if you're really interested in diversity, how about you treat people as individual human beings?

A lot of fanartists who do this are just doing it because the fandom will jump your ass for NOT doing it because then that's 'whitewashing.' There's no way for them to win. As a former (for unrelated reasons) fanartist, it sucks.

People definitely do this in the MDZS/The Untamed fandom and it's so weird. Like... everyone in it is Chinese already, but that's not POC enough? Okaaaaay.

as much as i would wish to say "i hope you have this energy for the poc characters who get lightened up 20 shades" the fact of the matter is that i wish poc characters could have the same non-reaction as white characters when people color them every which way because the presence and absence of light really does affect skin color that much. like cinderella in her own damn movie goes between orange and the lightest peach, but get a character with a tint and change their color and now it's a ~point~.

God, this is me towards Trigun fandom. Either they insist on drawing Wolfwood way darker than he is in canon because "POC rep!" or they completely whitewash Legato (who is also canonically tan).
