This always annoys me in anime fandom where you’ll have two Japanese characters living in Japan and one, usually an outdoorsy active type character, will be draw like half a shade darker than the quiet nerdier character, and now a chunk of fandom draws the active character with the darkest skin possible. Yes, I know there are dark skinned people in Japan and if the text indicated this was the case for this character (like their parents are also noticeably darker, or their heritage is mentioned) then that makes sense, but usually it’s just the author making a small contrast that’s only even visible in colored page spreads. And then you have artists crying ‘whitewashing’ and claiming they’re being erased because other people won’t draw the character with super dark skin. If you want to headcanon the character for POC rep go for it, but don’t assume the rest of fandom has to go along with it.

I remember a Tweet about someone complaining why Picrew didn't have many skin shade options, being the darkest one a tan. Picrew started like a Japanese page to make Japanese avatars, of course they'll have the most common skin tones from Japanese people.

Now there are tons of foreigners making Picrew avatars with more skin tones, but asking for tons of skin tones in a Japanese page is like "eh".
