Fanartist who definitely ends up doing this out of fear of having a rabid crowd accusing me of whitewashing simply because the light in a drawing is brighter than usual here...

I can't account for how many others also end up darkening some characters because of this, but I would bet we're not as few as some might think and definitely not as malicious. I've seen my fair share of artists being viciously attacked for supposedly painting characters as lighter than they are and I think nobody really wants to risk that storm, so we "compensate". It's not ideal, but it usually beats being screamed at and dragged through the mud just because you drew a scene with a particularly brighter light or something. It really is lose-lose.
