Man, I'm FROM the US and that blows my mind. My parents took me to the bank so I could open my own bank account when I was about 10 and then they gave me free rein to use whatever money I earned for whatever I wanted. I started petsitting/dogwalking and being a mother's helper when I was 12 and as far as they were concerned, that money was mine because I'd earned it. They never once touched my bank account even though I guess they legally had access to it.
