I wish more fantasy would explore exactly how a world would be different than ours (regardless of era) with the existence of magic. I don't care what era the world is in, things wouldn't be the same as ours with magic. Medieval? Cool. Anything else, cool. Just have some interesting differences. Actually think about it.

For example, in a world where magic existed, gender dynamics would probably be different. In a world where women can defend themselves all through time, why would things be the same?

If magic isn't innate and has to be taught, men could simply use force to prevent women from learning it, the same way oppressive patriarchies do with girls and education in the world today, even though that education is equally the key to their independence and freedom.

OTOH if it's innate yeah, you're right - patriarchy is enforced by violence, like as not it simply wouldn't exist in that world.
