I'm glad you're having this moment, OP! When I was active in some fandoms,the pairings I was into (in certain fandoms) were in need of new blood (any blood), especially since so many were really great WIPs that left me wanting :( (I am also guilty of this lol)

Man, okay, this one has been on my recommended (or at least popular) list. In my dreams, I hoped he was the romantic interest, but yeah, if he's a bad dude doing bad things, and the show has that. It's woobification, I guess. I mean I liked reading soft!ish Loki (like moments of humanity and vulnerability), but there are other characters that I just can't picture that way, like Negan from TWD (I could see him possibly sparing someone, if he thought they might have served a purpose later).

Annoyance. But also, fandom lol

I haven't watched it but do know a couple of fans and how angry they got at the main character on behalf of Ryu Shi-oh was A LOT.

I think it's weirdly easier for fans to forgive or cut slack for a villainous character when they do better than their previous terrible baseline, than forgive a character positioned to be 'good' when they make flawed or selfish decisions.

I can understand in that sometimes, because protagonist centered morality can be an issue in a canon, and an undercover/fake identity storyline is rife with tension, but the vitriol really put me off.
