This actually makes me want to rewatch it. It was ages ago and I remember so little.

I think I was mostly confused because I only knew Cronenberg’s body horror stuff and this was a completely different thing.

I haven't watched this particular movie, but I've always gotten the impression that Cronenberg likes to hold a mirror up to the audience, to show them literal and metaphorical grossness that they are both drawn to and repulsed by.

I don’t like that stuff, because who are you to tell me what I’m drawn to? Like Danganronpa’s thing where it thinks you’re playing to see teenagers sexualized and/or murdered, and it alternates between mocking you for it and “giving you what you want,” and meanwhile I just wanted to play something like Ace Attorney.

Then Cronenberg's films are probably not ones you're going to want to get into. I mean, I've only watched three, because while they are thought-provoking and artful, I do get the feeling that they are, in some part, meant as a rebuke, which I can't say I'm wild about myself. There are other directors that I feel are like that too, at least for some of their films, like Darren Aronofsky, Oliver Stone, and Gus Van Sant. I really dislike it when I get the feeling that any director is disdainful of their audience for enjoying their films.

This is one of the few Cronenberg movies I haven't seen! But at least with the other movies in his ouvre that I have seen, I'd say he's a cynical guy who doesn't necessarily agree with what's shown on screen as being good, but more true. It's a bit more like, "this is what society is, warts and all". He's very into the transgressive and grotesque as a whole, whether it's bodily, spiritually, and/or psychologically. Stuff like Eastern Promises and Crash fit more into the latter two.

It’s like he thinks all this offensive bullshit about men and women’s innate natures is true, but recognizes that it would be horrifying to live like that, so he’s trying to tell people to be better than their natures.

TBC the reason I’m calling it toxic masculinity is because he still thinks it’s true. I mean, I’m right over here, and I’m not a man or a woman, and I’m DEFINITELY not what he thinks a man or a woman is!

Yeah, he may not like what he thinks are universal values, but it doesn't mean they are actually universally true. I personally think his bio/tech horror films are much stronger; his dramas and thrillers tend to fall flat for me for this kind of reason.
