I will be majorly pissed off if SVU doesn't find a way to bring up the sickening silence from the world on the violent sex crimes committed against Israeli women on October 7th.

Maybe they can contrast it with the genocide being carried out by Israel, or mention the time the state of Israel tried to sterilize black women who immigrated to it?

Here's something you can do instead of being pissed off at a TV show: Donate monthly to Planned Parenthood. A lot of people proudly announced they were cancelling their donations after PP made a statement condemning the sex crimes. To be quite honest, the lack of confirmation that those crimes occurred makes the statement somewhat iffy, but I don't want anyone in my country to lose their only source of reproductive healthcare because of it and most people are not following the correct Twitters needed to see the alternative providers that the donation-cancellers were signaling.

No, see, the thing is, even if you're sincere, there are too many instances where it's clear that rape is simply being used as a shield to hate on Palestine that nobody will give you the benefit of the doubt. Most people making the denouncements clearly don't care about rape victims and are only using rape because they can say to anyone who calls them out, "So you're OK with rape when it's done to Israelis?!?!?!" and make accusations of victim blaming. It's very convenient and insidious.

So long as they also bring up the sickening silence from the world on the sexual violence against both men and women by the Israeli government against the Palestinians for the last 70 years. They're all victims.

Nah, man. It's not about that. It's like a lynching - all the people with power are mad that a woman was raped. All the people without power are protesting that the people with power are burning down the black neighborhoods and killing all the inhabitants because a woman was raped. One of these things is far, far worse than the other, and suggesting that people should focus on the rape is trying to distract from the mass murder that is being perpetrated on innocent people. Always side eye people who want all the attention on the smaller problem of a situation - it's an excuse for them to do what they've always wanted.

It is possible to be concerned about both. I'm sure they exist, but I don't know anyone who says that the victims of Oct 7th deserved it. They're just saying that people have limited resources and limited energy and asking us to turn our attention from the objectively greater atrocity being committed right in front of our eyes to the lesser evil is almost always coming from someone who doesn't believe the genocide is a genocide. Naturally, we tell those people to fuck off. Not because we're virtue signalling, or we victim blame, or we just loooove rape. It's because we only have so much in us, and we don't want to deal with genocide apologists who are using the Oct 7th attack to justify mass murder, too.

I know several people who have said the victims of Oct 7th deserved it. Not trolls, they were people I had followed for years and had been smart and thoughtful and compassionate before. And in my circles, I frankly take it for granted at this stage, that if someone doesn't say a word about Israeli victims once (not of rape- we don't know for sure there was any rape- of the bombing) it's a dogwhistle for not caring or also believing they deserved it but not wanting to say it and hiding behind the excuse I also frequently hear, "I don't have to talk about Israeli victims because everyone already expects everyone else to feel sad about them."

You are correct in that we don't know for sure there was any rape, but people suuuure do like to bring it up as if it were undisputed-happened-on-video and for sure an absolute justification for everything Israel is doing. Which doesn't help the victims of Oct 7th at all. Nor non-Israeli jews around the world. Everything just needs to fucking stop.

You're ignoring the "in my circles" context. Those circles are the very ones that almost everyone on F!S is in: fandoms that are primarily leftist, female, and heavily queer. And nobody in those circles overlooks talking about the Palestinian victims, so I've never run into this dogwhistle of not doing so. If we were speaking in a context of mainstream news coverage or our real life acquaintances' water cooler talk, then sure. Not talking about Palestinian victims may be a dogwhistle. But fandom is so heavily leaning in the opposite direction that I take the opposite type of silence as a dogwhistle there too.

The rape is still an atrocity, dude. You seem to not get that. Multiple wrongs do not make anyone right.

Where did I say it wasn't? You are correct, multiple wrongs do not make anyone right. The genocide in response to a smaller attack is compounding the wrong. We cannot even begin to redress any of it until the genocide is halted. Attempts to get us to focus on the smaller attack instead of the ongoing mass murder is not the say the smaller attack is NOT an atrocity. It's to say it is of less immediacy. And people who think that it should be considered with more attention and urgency are indistinguishable right now from people who think the genocide is a good response to it.

You seem to not get that.

I get that just fine. I just happen to disagree which apparently makes me pure evil now, according to the kiddos on the Interwebs. I think there needs to be focus on both, especially with anti-Semitism sharply on the rise in my country and in many other places in the world.
