They didn't destroy the Republic in TFA. They committed a terrible atrocity in the way a group of imperial wannabes totally would, they hurt it for sure. It was that movie where the font of all problems floweth from, The Last Jedi, which decided they destroyed it. Because Rian wasn't content to try and continue a story someone else set up but had to want to wipe the board clean for his movie as he doesn't understand how trilogies work. Or is too arrogant to understand how trilogies work, depending on how charitable or not you want to be about the fuckwit.
