(Anonymous) 2024-01-20 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)Maturity is the opposite of that. It's having the life experience to realize that what some anon said about your fanfic or what some villain in your TV show did to your blorbo is not, in fact, omigoddddd the worst thing in the world. Lots of adults get frustrated and bored with teens because they seem constantly overdramatic and overinvested in stuff that the adult who has watched 9000 of these shows and run into 900000 rando internet anons has already seen happen or already knows does not matter at all, but to the teen it may literally be the worst or best thing they have ever experienced simply because they have not experienced much and this is their very first fandom ever.
Now imagine that only with literally everything about life in every big age gap ship featuring a teen with a 30+ year old. Is it surprising that most adults would find that awful and unappealing?
If there's truly nothing different about you vs. the teens you run into... welp, at least that's a real confession here for once, intended or not.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-20 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)Idgaf what people ship for the record, but it's completely understandable why that dynamic is boring and unappealing to so many.
+1
(Anonymous) 2024-01-20 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)Well said, but that^ bit in particular made me laugh.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-20 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)I didn't experience the full gamut of awful shit some children do, but the legit traumatic stuff kid me dealt with didn't make me more mature, it just fucked me up. And it didn't give me much if any perspective about the relative unimportance of fiction and fictional characters compared to rl hardship.
I probably would have cared less about my fictional faves and what happened to them if I wasn't using fiction as a lifeline to cope.
I get where you're coming from when it comes to online drama having less impact and importance the more often you see the same arguments and infighting happen over and over, though.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-21 12:10 am (UTC)(link)Fans scaring extremely about some fandom news they like and obsessing over it as though it's the best thing in their lives is common in fandoms full of teens; the screaming and/or obsessive teen fan is a common thing for a reason and considered normal for that age bracket and not for 30+ for a reason; it has nothing to do with trauma because it's about people with no trauma, too.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-21 12:13 am (UTC)(link)I get what you mean, for sure. But I went through some pretty messed up stuff as a kid and I still agree with AYRT. I agree with you as well, in that it didn't give me much of a mature perspective to go through that stuff. My perspective does however change a lot with age and time. My "experience" as a kid was very bewildering and it took until I was a lot older to make sense of it and learn from it.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-21 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, sure, tell me more about your 1000 year old vampire in the body of an 8 year old. It's fine because characters aren't bound by real truths about age, right?
I jest, but hopefully you get the point. People being uninterested by age gap ships who are already repulsed or uninterested by the idea of teenagers aren't going to read the story and find out how this teenager isn't really a teenager but a 35 year old stuck in the body of a 16 year old. They're gonna be like oof this character is 16, no thanks.
And that's fine, they don't have to like that.
Also, half the secret was about a significantly older OP, IRL, being the same as teens on Tumblr, IRL...
