Re: What are things people do in fanfic that just throw you out of the fic?

Okay, you're probably not talking about the fandoms that immediately sprung to mind for me, because that seems pretty spot on for some of the canons I know. (For real, how do any Muggleborns get sent to Hogwarts? Oh, you want my eleven-year-old to go to a school that I don't know the location of, cannot visit, couldn't even see if I was right in front of it, with a bunch of adults I don't know and have no way of verifying their worthiness as teachers and/or caretakers? Cool, cool.)

Anyway, incorrect physical descriptions of characters throw me right out of a fic.

This feels extremely petty of me and sometimes like I'm the only one who notices, but heights. I'm constantly amazed by how many people get the heights of characters in a visual medium wrong (either in general or as relative to other characters) when it's right in front of their faces.

Sometimes it seems to me like they've got to be willfully ignoring it? Like they think it'd be cuter if that wasn't the case? There's this female character in one of my favourite video games who is quite clearly around the same height as her male companions in many scenes and even taller than some of them in others, but when it comes to fanfic/fanart suddenly she's like chest-height to all of them.

Oh also it comes from the fact that people think actors' listed heights are their actual heights sometimes, which is adorable in its naivety, but I also have to question whether or not people have eyes (Hank/Christobal is a good example).

One of my het OTPs is two short people; the actor is ~5'6" with a listed height of 5'8", which discrepancy is easy to spot because of multiple movies and shows where he's had mug shots taken/been part of a police lineup. The actress has a listed height of 5'2" which is probably accurate.

Most of the fic for them gets their heights right, or doesn't mention it beyond him being taller than she is. The few where he's described as tall (and young, usually, which he's not) throw me right off.

My most recent OTP is m/m, and if the actors aren't the same height, they're pretty close. Same build, too, with one having maybe a few pounds on the other only because one slimmed down and worked out for months because he did almost a whole episode as a naked prisoner in a glass cage and was meant to look otherworldly and also scrawny and vulnerable. And one has brownish-black hair and the other blueish-black.

The amount of fanart and number of fics where the one with so dark it might as well be black brown hair has light brown hair, linebacker shoulders, and a full head of height on the other character so he can be the designated top (and so much fanart gets his nose wrong) or whatever annoys the shit out of me.

The hair thing miiiiiight be cultural: I had my hair described as "blonde" when I lived in Japan, when by North American standards it's medium brown (maybe light brown, at a stretch, in the summer) and heard people whose hair I would describe as black referred to as brown-haired - "black" was for pure, jet black only.

There's no excuse for the height thing though, I've seen that happen to identical twins in fanart when someone decides one's the top and one's the bottom - I'd guess that's what's going on with female character shortening, too.

This swings me back to my very brief stint in The Untamed fandom where I didn't ship the main couple but saw plenty of fanart of them by simple osmosis, and the number of times I saw show-art with Wangji nearly a whole two heads taller than Wuxian, despite Wuxian's actor in the LA being taller(significantly so to the point where Wangji's actor actually wore heels so he wasn't noticeably smaller), just because Wangji is 'the top' and thus couldn't be shorter than Wuxian. It was fucking hilarious.

I think (?) in the original novel LWJ is supposed to be taller than WWX, and in the show they tried to do a lot of heavy lifting with camera angles, but you're right - not only was LWJ's actor noticeably shorter, but he was also obviously wearing heels, which made it even funnier. The actors were perfect for their roles regardless. And I thought it was cute to have a shorter (and arguably prettier? and younger?) seme. That made it kind of interesting to look at instead of same old, same old.

But I guess artists drawing GIANT LWJ and TINY WWX could say they're going by the author's original intent.

That's just the limits of a live action show. In the book, WWX comes back in actual!MXY body, not MXY rearranged to look like WWX. And MXY was petite.
