Has anyone stopped Swift from doing it? Then of course it's allowed. But you know that, right?

You said it has to be pointed out that there is a discrepancy between her persona and her lived experiences so yeah, it kinda does sound like you think she's not supposed to act like she's more humble than she actually is. Since, you know, you just have to point it out all the time.

Nayrt but it's extremely common that people like artists to be genuine. I don't doubt that TSwift believes she's a little ol girl next door, I don't think she's deliberately misrepresenting herself out of slyness or whatever, but it's absolutely common for this exact scenario to he called out. I've seen much harsher things said about Kid Rock on the same topic

I guess that's true. I think it's kind of silly, personally, but I think it might also have something to do with the music genre an artist belongs to. I feel like people do expect, for example, singer/songwriters to be genuine much more than, say, metal artists who often have more out-there stage personas.

Her whole schtick is that she is supposed to be super duper relatable. I don't know if she's ever actually acted like her music is supposed to be the last word on the universal female experience, or if that's just what a fuckton of her fans insist on their own initiative (probably the latter), but that's definitely what she trades on. Being genuine is the entire thing her whole image and career centers on. So I get why people would be annoyed about disingenuousness in that regard, with her

THIS

I worked in the music industry in the 90s, so maybe things have changed, but generally since, oh, 1950 or so, we've assumed that musicians are genuine. there is little to no "persona," what you see in the press is nothing more than putting on one's customer service face. It's not a wholesale invented fakeness, and while we may guess that actors do that sometimes (while wishing to believe they didn't), musicians have always been different. We have always believed that they were close enough in public to who they were in private. I only hate Taylor Swift for being an environment-killing private jet bitch, but if she's also fake as fuck, just add that whipped cream to the sundae.

Speak for yourself there, chief.

I mean seriously, this just seems like an utterly bizarre thing to say about the pop music industry? MAYBE at some point the record-buying public was under the delusion that it was true but it's certainly not something that ever actually was true.

This is the most Gen X thing I've ever read on this comm.

That's such bullshit. Such utter, utter bullshit. Nobody who had more than two braincells actually believed that any bigger musician is 100 % genuine, with no fake/stage persona attached. Maybe in some select genres but overall? Especially in the 90s, holy hell. In the golden age of casted boy/girlgroups who had their personalities assigned to them to maximise audience appeal?
