Re: Gripe thread

About, oh, a week or so ago, someone I follow reblogged a screenshot of a retweet. The original tweet was someone saying something like, "you're all useless" and "I guess I'll just wait for me and my family to die." The gist of the retweet was, "if this makes you mad, then you're not a true pro-Palestinian ally. This should make you want to do MORE."

All I could think was: what does "MORE" mean to you, or to anyone passing this around? What are you actually giving to this cause you care so much about? Because I suspect the reason the original party was so upset; the reason he was saying that everyone is "useless;" is because everyone's idea of "activism" is "raising awareness" while sitting comfortably on their asses and clutching their purse strings. Or, only slightly more charitably, it's staging protests outside of cancer centers.

I remember when the war in Ukraine started. People actually packed up and went to the Ukraine and surrounding countries. These people on Tumblr and Twitter who claim to care SO FUCKING MUCH about Palestine? They aren't doing that. They aren't putting their money where their mouth is. They're engaging in a giant circle jerk, using the bloodshed as yet another excuse to shame and self-aggrandize.

And, to be clear, I'm not saying that anyone is obligated to do that. But I am saying that if you're showcasing your "allyship" and using it to lambast other people, then you should walk the goddamn walk instead of just flapping your electronic lips.

psst, those were mercenaries and crazier wanting a safari. They're not doing it now because less money as US supports Israel and more bombing in Gaza. Also any foreigner risks to get killed by Gaza side if they go there, especially LGBT and women. So you saying 'Go there!' is moronic.

The people in my area who went there were not mercenaries. They went and devoted their time to helping the people affected get aid, shelter, and safe passage.

You are also overlooking the part where I said no one is obligated to do this. I did not, in fact, say "go there;" I drew a comparison between people who put their money where their mouth is and people whose activism begins and ends with showcasing how "good" they are.

By friends you mean online bloggers that you have parasocial relationship with.So your 'friends' went to Europe near Ukraine to help refugees and that is why people need to go to Gaza. Yeah, those two things are the same. /s

I didn't say "friends." I said "people in my area." I was referring to actual people in my area, in my community, not to bloggers; we are not all cut off from meatspace. And, again, I didn't say that people needed to go; I specifically said that they didn't.

What's going on with you, anon?

So no one you know. Glad we cleared that up.

Are the only people you know in your community your friends?

I'm no longer even sure what point you're trying to make. I am, however, a bit amused at the improvement in your English over the course of this conversation.

ooh, a personal atack. Juicy. I mean that you think that going to Europe and to Gaza is the same, especially for women and LGBTQ. But, seeing how you can't remember a comment in such a small thread, I gotta say goodbye and I hope you don't work anywhere where people depend on your ability to think.
