Re: Gripe thread
regardless, it's irrelevant to its effectiveness if its to improve someone's standing (its not irrelevant to whether there is any follow-through or trust, but that's not what i'm talking about), social punishment as performance is often really effective for social issues even if you don't like it (that's why a lot of policy tries to identify if institutional processes can be used performatively to chill behavior), and the last 1000 years suggests that overall backlash still serves to normalize the original position by proliferation. does peta suck? yeah. did peta serve to make vegans the butt of many jokes? yeah. is veganism still more acceptable as a diet or lifestlye now than before without much change in vegan activism? yeah.
i agree that thoughtfulness is key for quicker effectiveness though!
Re: Gripe thread
(Anonymous) 2024-01-23 08:11 am (UTC)(link)I think a lot of the primary use of social punishment as performance is going to be to normalize views within a specific demographic cohort. So if you're in a demographic cohort where a lot of people are pro-Palestine, social punishment can convince you to adopt those views and express them more strongly. But if you're talking about using social movements to enact political change in Western Europe or the Anglosphere in the near term, that's not enough. You need to persuade people, especially people who are *outside* the social cohorts that already are pro-Palestine.
So, it's not just a lack of organization. Honestly, I think the whole political analysis of the situation is pretty flawed.

if you would like to say more, i could probably respond, but so far i think this is so clearly an issue of social media allowing a lot of opinions but making organization difficult to me.
