See, to me as a queer person, why I liked this show so much better than so much other stuff that's touted as being "queer media" was the fact that the queerness was just a part of the larger story rather than The Entire Plot. I just can't relate to the majority of queer media that makes the queerness the entire focus of the plot and the character relationships, what I want is media that has queer characters in queer relationships WITHOUT it being the be-all end-all of everything.

It's a comedic, tongue-in-cheek show about pirates who happen to be gay. Give me more of that, please.

This. When Sense8 came out everyone was touting it as OMG **THE** QUEER MEDIA and I couldn't watch it (and to be fair I did not watch the whole thing so maybe the later episodes changed) because there didn't feel like a plot beyond 'queer'.

Sense8 was one I really enjoyed but the early episodes (where the main characters were portrayed as media stereotypes before this got twisted around) were not great. I made it through for Freema Agyeman and sad, sad Naveen Andrews, and the visuals were spectacular, but I agree it showed up in fandom as The Gay Show.

Yeah, that was one I had recommended to me and I ended up dropping it for exactly the same reason. Maybe there was a plot later on, I don't know. I couldn't get more than a few episodes in.

I very much enjoyed Sense8 but I’ll be the first person to say that the plot was largely incoherent. I watched it for the characters I loved, which is absolutely fair if none grabbed you. I like to suggest that people give it a try but I’m never annoyed if they bounce off because it is in all honestly a bit of an acquired taste.

+1 I recently did a rewatch and while I love the emotional ride of it and the characters, the plot is really just a vehicle for the Message at any given moment

I've watched other queer media where the point of the show wasn't the queerness. And sure, OFMD was cute, but it def isn't the best out there and the fandom is... whooboy.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-24 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
There are a ton of queer shows like that and I dont understand why so many OFMD fans act like OFMD is the only queer media show like that

(Anonymous) 2024-01-24 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Recs? Because everything that keeps getting recced to me always ends up falling into the category of queer first and media second.

DA

Black Sails, for one.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-24 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I've heard of that show, but never once have I seen anyone mention that it has queer characters in it.

Thanks, anon! I'll definitely check it out.

Black Sails is too brutal for me.

Hannibal, with the hallucination 4 way sex scene with the Stag Man watching by the fireplace, and the kaleidoscope lesbian sex.

Barry! It has gay crime lords, no less. And is extremely funny (though it has dark/serious moments too, be warned).

White Lotus also has central gay characters in each season, though the second may stray a little into "plot is being gay" for your tastes, as she's discovering her sexuality.

If you don't mind silly or at least goofy in concept:

Warrior Nun.
First Kill.
She Ra: and the princesses of power.
Legends of tomorrow.
Supergirl(more the support cast but it's still part of the show).
Good Omens.

For more serious and fucked up:
The recent Interview with a Vampire show.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-24 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen She-Ra and Good Omens! I enjoyed them a lot because they were pretty much exactly the sort of thing I was looking for.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-24 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard The Terror also fits this category, but I haven't watched it yet.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-25 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
See people keep saying this and its...ehhhhhhh??

There are 4 queer characters.

One who actively weaponizes sex and is the fucking WORST person on the god damn show
One who is the subject of that weaponization

And then two healthy queers. Who I love very much.

and then there are the other characters people headcanon as some flavor of queer who get more attention in the fandom lol.

The show is fucking great though, and I love every one of those crew members; they are all written well. The WORST person oh boy he's written so well.

Fun: What We Do in the Shadows, Doom Patrol (--yes the Main gay struggles with being gay in flashbacks but he's fine in present. And every character save 1 in the core cast is some flavor of queer), Harley Quinn, Star Trek Discovery
Serious but amazing: Black Sails, Yellowjackets (those girls got other things to worry about than being queer)

(Anonymous) 2024-01-24 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'd also love to Rec Spartacus because its queer as fuck but that show has a lot of caveats I give people before I tell them to watch it (the show is equal opportunity 'Rome really sucked for everyone regardless of gender if you had no power'). [The first season def had the token gay couple that they do fridging on but they course corrected]

(Anonymous) 2024-01-24 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
I am going to miss Doom Patrol so much. Such a stupid (complimentary) show

(Anonymous) 2024-01-25 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just thankful that they got the heads up about their cancellation and got to end the show in a way that was on their terms. My beautiful fucked up little family of assholes <3

(Anonymous) 2024-01-24 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
This is my preferred type of queer media as well and fun as the show was it’s not even close to being the only or first kind of show like this like the fandom likes to claim.

OP of this particular subthread and thanks so much for all of the recs, guys! I've got a whole bunch of stuff to check out now.

It's really interesting to me that I haven't had most of these recced to me where I asked for queer media recs in other places, though. Those always got me shows like Sense8 and Heartstopper and Orange is the New Black, all of which are pretty much perfect examples of the kind of things I'm NOT interested in. I guess some people think media with queer characters doesn't count as queer media if the plot isn't all about being queer...
