The amount of psychic damage I take every time I see "this character has feminine traits, they must be a secret woman trans man!" is enormous.

AYRT: And is not even "feminine traits" at all. The Lan clan had calligraphy and art classes too that men would learn too, and is not Huaisang's fault that he was born in the Nie clan. Hell, even women in the Nie clan could fight.

One of my fandoms has popular trans headcanon because this character is... soft-spoken.
And it's one of those fandoms that does not always tag for it. Argh

The amount of psychic damage I take every time I see an assumption that the reason for a character being headcanoned as trans is "they have a trait I (the one making the assumption) associate with a gender!" is enormous.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-25 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
If that isn't the reason, then why haven't I ever seen a traditionally feminine girl headcanoned as being a trans girl or a traditionally masculine man headcanoned as being a trans man?

(Anonymous) 2024-01-25 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. It's almost always gnc people. No. Not people. It's amlmost always gnc guys. Because god forbid you have female trans headcanon.

Like... wouldn't a gnc male-presenting person be more likely to be a closeted trans woman if they're trans? Because trans women and women and trans men are men? I went to a very liberal university in a very liberal area and know a ton of trans guys and they're just dudes, man.

GNC trans men exist, obviously, and all due respect to them, but you shouldn't be able to predict The Guy That Fandom Will Headcanon As Trans with laser-guided precision based on traits that are conventionally considered feminine if people are legitimately respecting the gender of these characters.

AYRT
Exactly! One of my fandoms has 4 main popular guys.
1) Leader who is always plotting
2) Sarcastic researcher who swears alot
3) Extraverted easy going guy with interest in engeneering and architecture
4) A bit of a doormat nice guy with interest in arts

Guess who is the main trans!headcanon
Tbf to a fandom he isn't the only one, he is the only one just like 90% of the time

Yeaaaahhhh I said this in a comment below, but trans men are people, and therefore not a monolith and while they might have observable commonalities due to shared experiences, they are not all going to find exactly the same character "the most relatable" 100% or even 90% of the time. When I see actual trans men making trans headcanons it isn't always the same character. This is something else entirely.

I don't know a lot of trans people and all of them afab, I live there it isn't safe to be out. So experience is limited. (Funnily enough none of them are heavily into trans headcanons actually. I wonder if our shared experience in our hell hole of the country to blame. I never was into ace headcanons despite being ace myself. Strangel

This is a good point, I also know lots of trans guys find trans headcanons triggering and I can't imagine fandom going "ah, a man who acts/looks like what our society expects of a woman, must be a trans man" is particularly helping matters.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-26 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
EXACTLY. I have a bunch of friends who are trans guys and they're all drawn to totally different types of characters. If they were the sort of people to have trans headcanons, you'd see all sorts of different character types being headcanoned as trans because they all relate to different characters.

Yes! I said below, but this happened in my last fandom, and it's like night and day when it's "trans guys trans hc'ing their fave" and "fandom has ordained that this one is close enough to a woman to be a trans man". Like, some of them still pick that guy - and that's fine! But not everyone.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-27 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, like right now one of my trans guy friends is really into Cid from FFXVI, who is pretty traditionally masc! He's physically rugged and is fairly brusque personality-wise (from what I know about him) and really doesn't have any traits that one would consider "feminine," but he's the character that my friend relates to the most (which isn't a huge surprise since said friend is pretty masc himself). If he were going to pick anyone to trans hc I would guess it would be Cid.

That's why I don't believe for one second that all of these trans hcs come from actual trans guys when they're all focused on the exact same character and that character just so happens to be the most gnc/feminine male character.

Lmao I mean if you don't think there are "traits associated with a gender" at large in our society and individuals make them up arbitrarily in our own heads I want what you're having but I suspect you do not, actually, think that.

You are correct that I should have said "conventionally" or "stereotypically" feminine traits for clarity or at least to forestall bad faith arguments, though.
