What are some movies/novels/podcast episodes etc. that started out as standalones but later got sequels/got turned into a series that in your opinion would have been better off staying standalones?

Yeah, I hate this as well. Generally, everything that isn't a high school/coffeeshop/college or similar AU will be super awkward with the whole pronoun-and-identity introductions.
Also generally characters OOC soapboxing about the author's pet issue, often at the most bizarre Times in a plot. I would say that this is mainly an issue with younger authors but I've seen more than a few profiles that stated their ages way above twenty so it's not limited to age and/or lived experience.

I think The Matrix worked perfectly well as a self contained standalone movie and didn't need any sequels at all.

One that's been said many times before: The Hobbit should have only been one movie, maybe 2 at a stretch, but three was overkill and the series ended up being very disappointing. And I was even willing to see how things went, but I wish they'd been able to keep it at one.

Jurassic Park. I know the movies are money makers, but the Jurassic Park sequels were pretty bad and Jurassic World is a shitshow.

It's suspicious how often it's the exact issue of "niche sexual orientations and genders" and "trending" ones (ah yes, just a fad, that identity. There's your real issue right there) that gets complaints in this type of secret about how characters would not behave because it's OOC, yet I have never seen a fanfic situation as egregious as the perpetual claim about characters pausing in life-threatening situations to soapbox about them.

The ones I have seen being more rabid were HCs from Nie Huaisang from MDSZ. He doesn't want to fight, something common from his clan, but loves to do stuff that other clans can do (art, reading and have a dandy lifestyle) without problems? Totally a trans man!
